Episode Title: [We Sailed To The Island Of THE WALKERS Ep 174]
Subtitles: coming up in this week’s episode we set sail on the cracking dawn to a very special place, can we navigate Atlas through a tricky reef? Cut going to spot low water definitely to the edge of the reef over there and will we make it out alive? This is crazy.
The big day has arrived for the big sail. It’s 5 am and they’re planning to leave at 6, head out trying to get a full six (12 hours of daylight) as they are in Fiji. They’ve looked at their charts and realized they’ll be making a passage to another island called Makoni Island, which is down here and they plan to anchor somewhere around this area right here.
They’re setting off with great excitement, with the song ‘Feel It In My Bones’ playing as they set sail for Makoni Island. They look forward to the beautiful island they’ll be visiting.
Upon reaching the reef, there’s a lot of concern but confidence as well. They say they will take it easy and follow through with their plan as people have done this before them.
Upon arriving at Makoni Island, they find a little village there. They say it feels like being back in time and want to have respect for the people who live here.
The island has a history tied with it, being known as Makeway. It was once home to the leprosy colony run by the missionary sisters from 1907-1969 when leprosy isolation was believed to be a cure. More than 1500 people were buried there.
They visit the village and are guided by John, who shares about its history. People used to call all staff members the ‘Walkers’. It’s a fascinating insight into this secluded island.
Makoni Island is truly the hidden treasure of Fiji, and sailing here to its rich history makes for an unforgettable adventure. So set sail, be cautious with the treacherous reefs but most importantly respect the lives of those who live there.
