Tackling The WILD West Coast Of New Zealand Head On! / Sailing Around NZ Pt 18 Ep163

Welcome aboard The Sailing Brothers for an unforgettable voyage up the west coast of New Zealand!

In this thrilling episode, we prepare and set off on a 304-mile passage that’s nothing short of wild. We’ll brave the untamed coastline from the south to the northern tip, through the famous Fjord of Spirits Bay.

Why choose this adventure?

This expedition promises some serious challenges – there are no safe harbors along the entire stretch! Expect rugged coastlines, big swells, and rough seas as we make our way to Spirits Bay. It’s going to be a wild ride, but don’t worry – The Sailing Brothers are here to navigate every wave with skill and expertise.

An unforgettable wildlife encounter

In this episode, we’ll also witness something truly special. We spot a group of majestic orcas right in the harbor! What are these fascinating creatures doing so close to shore? Join us as we try to uncover the secrets behind their unusual visit.

A taste of local life

Before we embark on our epic journey, let’s explore New Plymouth and meet Atlas – The Sailing Brothers’ latest acquisition. Say hello to the crew’s new tender, Cheddar Maya, named after the delicious cheese and a daughter of Greek god Atlas. Oh, and don’t miss our trip to the laundromat!

The passage itself – weather and challenges

Our 304-mile challenge starts with a strong southeasterly wind behind us, making for smooth downwind sailing. But as we progress along the coastline, winds will pick up, reaching gusts of around 30 knots.

We’ll face large swells, heavy rolling seas and cold temperatures on this passage – not to mention some sleep-deprived nights as we sail through this wild stretch. How do The Sailing Brothers keep their spirits up during such tough times? By enjoying tasty chicken sandwiches while managing Atlas through these challenging conditions.

Watch the episode and join us on this wild ride!

Don’t miss any of the excitement. From large swells to incredible wildlife encounters, this episode will keep you at the edge of your seat. Like, comment, and subscribe for more.

In this weeks episode we finally get a half decent weather window to leave New Plymouth for the 300 nm passage up the wild West coast to the very top of New Zealand
