Riding The Whirlpools Of French Pass / Sailing Around NZ Pt 17 Ep 161

In this exciting episode, The Sailing Brothers encounter the formidable French Pass in New Zealand. Brace yourself as they sail through its powerful whirlpools, and experience their trepidation and exhilaration firsthand. Join them on this adventure of a lifetime as they describe their journey with incredible detail. Location and Navigation The brothers begin their voyage from Buluma, located in the Marvel Sounds of New Zealand’s North Ireland South Ireland. Their destination is French Pass, approximately 20 nautical miles away, with an alternate route leading to a nearby bay for anchoring. Weather Conditions and Preparations The weather is benign on this morning but is expected to change, filling in from the north with winds ranging between 5-10 knots. The sailors recognize that the French Pass has currents running up to 8 knots, recommending going through it rather than against it if possible. The Voyage Through French Pass Upon entering the pass, they discover a significant drop in depth from 13 meters to a whopping 109 meters. The force of water off the shelf creates whirlpools and turbulence that can only be described as intense. Tackling the Whirlpools The brothers expertly navigate through the dangerous waters, avoiding shallow reefs with sheer determination and skill. The depth drops suddenly in these whirlpools, creating an awe-inspiring and somewhat frightening spectacle. Relaxation Time Post-Passage Upon completing their challenging journey, the brothers decide to continue to Nelson. They make the most of their sail by motor-sailing, using some free time for washing clothes and enjoying a delicious meal with cheese, sausages, and pasta. Exploration in Nelson Upon arrival at the city of Nelson, the brothers eagerly explore their surroundings, enjoying local parks and second-hand shops. They also marvel at the abundance of colorful flowers adorning streets and public spaces. A New Tender to Replace an Old One During their time in Nelson, the brothers purchase a new tender boat, recognizing the importance of upgrading from their old 2.3m model that had become dangerous and uncomfortable. They compare it with their impressive new 2.7m vessel, highlighting its superior performance. Reflecting on Their Adventure The brothers revisit the treacherous anchorage they had to endure, where 36-knot winds and massive waves made their stay challenging. They express gratitude towards their amazing Patreon supporters, without whom this incredible adventure around New Zealand would not have been possible. Conclusion The brothers thank their supporters for making their incredible journey halfway around the world in New Zealand possible. They express appreciation for the financial backing that allowed them to upgrade their equipment, ensuring safer and more enjoyable voyages. Join The Sailing Brothers on future episodes as they continue to navigate through breathtaking landscapes and fascinating cultures of New Zealand and beyond. Their journey is a testament to determination, skill, and camaraderie in the face of adversity. Don’t miss out on their next exciting adventure!
