North Island Here We Come!! / Sailing Around NZ Pt 17 Ep162

Introduction to Sailing North Island from South Island

In this captivating episode of ‘The Sailing Brothers’, you’ll join the dynamic duo on an unforgettable sailing adventure as they journey from Nelson, nestled in the South Island of New Zealand, to the picturesque shores of North Island’s New Plymouth. With a keen eye for detail and an unrelenting spirit, Adam and Llywelyn cross challenging waters while meticulously navigating the unpredictable winds and weather that grace their incredible Tasman National Park surroundings.

A Weather Window and an Adventure Beckons

Following on from last week’s episode, The Sailing Brothers pack up their Nelson anchorage, setting sail towards the pristine beauty of Anchorage Bay in the awe-inspiring Tasman National Park. Here they await a suitable weather window for embarking on their northbound voyage along the wild west coast of New Zealand.

Embracing a Tight Weather Window

After five days of cautious waiting and anticipation, Adam and Llywelyn discern an emerging weather window they decide to seize upon. While not entirely certain about its stability, the Sailing Brothers have made daring decisions before—trusting their instincts, skills, and preparation.

Navigating a Challenging Coastline

As they set sail towards their destination in North Island’s New Plymouth, The Sailing Brothers expertly maneuver their vessel through treacherous conditions on the wild west coast of New Zealand. Despite facing tough winds and difficult sailing angles at crucial points such as Cape Egmont, their experience shines through.

Technical Adjustments Keep the Engine Cool

During their journey, a concerning increase in engine temperature leads to some immediate action by the experienced sailors. With a closer look at their lithium batteries’ status and their alternator’s power draw, they take strategic measures—reducing DC load—to keep their vessel operating efficiently.

Relishing Local Cuisine on Board

Taking moments of relaxation amidst challenging conditions, the pair savors a meal prepared using ingredients typical to the New Zealand shores. Corned beef and garlic bread with mashed potatoes prove to be quite delightful in their real-life onboard setting.

Sailing into New Plymouth

Through their persistence, skillful navigation, and unwavering spirits, The Sailing Brothers finally reach the destination of New Plymouth. They dock their vessel expertly and are greeted by a scenic view that is worth every mile of the challenging journey undertaken.

Musings on Another Successful Voyage

Reflecting on their successful crossing, Adam and Llywelyn express their gratitude to those who have supported them along this incredible voyage. The pair remains inspired by their club members whose enthusiasm fuels the sails of their adventurous dreams.
