In this week’s episode, we take you on an exhilarating overnight sail from the breathtaking Bay of Big Clams to Suva, the vibrant capital of Fiji. As we navigate through notoriously uncharted waters and face the challenges posed by treacherous reefs and shifting winds, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and peril that lie beneath the surface.
< !-- wp : heading -->Our journey begins with a carefully calculated route, taking us south through the narrow Channel between the Bay of Big Clams and the open ocean. As we leave behind the tranquil anchorage, we find ourselves navigating a labyrinth of shallow reefs that surround Guy Island. These uncharted waters demand constant vigilance, as evidenced by the 11-meter-deep cut we had previously noted while making our way in.
< !-- wp : paragraph -->To ensure a safe passage, we maintain a course that keeps us clear of the reefs on either side, all the while battling against a southeasterly wind that intensifies as we progress. The shifting winds test our resolve and force us to adapt our strategy, making careful adjustments to our sail trim to maintain maximum speed without compromising safety.
< !-- wp : heading -->The night brings new challenges, as we navigate through a Reef-cut passage to enter Suva Harbor. As the wind dies down to just 6 knots, we find ourselves pushing harder than ever to maintain momentum and stay on course. With the help of our new sails installed by boatshed Sailmakers, we are able to maintain a steady speed of 8.5 knots, even in the face of adversity.
< !-- wp : heading -->Arriving in Suva Harbor just as dawn breaks, we are struck by the contrast of the modern skyscrapers and industrial smells that greet us. Despite the challenges of the passage, our preparations have paid off, enabling a safe arrival. We are acutely aware of the importance of being properly provisioned, maintaining our gear, and staying vigilant in order to overcome the obstacles posed by these treacherous waters.
< !-- wp : heading -->As we reflect on this incredible journey, we are already looking ahead to the next phase of our adventure. With the help of our generous club members on Patreon, we will be upgrading our solar power system in Australia, increasing our self-sufficiency and enabling further exploration of remote corners of the world.
< !-- wp : heading -->This episode has underscored the importance of preparation, adaptability, and teamwork in navigating through challenging situations. We have faced treacherous reefs, shifting winds, and unexpected obstacles with a combination of skill, determination, and support from our dedicated community. As we continue to document our journey, we invite you to join us for the next chapter in our sailing adventure.
