This year we weighed up whether to sail from NZ to Fiji or to Vanuatu. The final decision was made easier by Rob’s desire to visit the Lau group and in particular to visit Vulaga, the jewel in Southern Lau’s crown.
Up until about 10 years ago it was difficult to get a cruising license to visit this area. These are very traditional islands and the government wanted to keep it that way. A change in government brought about a change in cruising permits. Now every boat that sails to Fiji may visit this area. From one or two boats a year Vulaga now see’s over 100. Their busiest day last year saw 30 boats
arrive in the lagoon.
Although the villagers enjoy the boats arriving and say that this doesn’t effect their lifestyle, it is bound to have some impact.
And although we are part of the problem we just couldn’t help ourselves wanting to be immersed in this perfect little postcard of community bliss.
Music
Cricket Farm – Bending Spoons

Apron Strings – White trash wedding
