Wainapanapa Cave Expedition 1992

Throwback Thursday Video – Year: 1992

Maui, Hawaii – Quick video or Wainapanapa Cave shortly before I swam in and explored the system with nothing but a mask and snorkel. The system goes back pretty far and there are several places where you have to submerge and swim underwater in the sharp lava tubes. At the time, I only had a verbal map (from a friend) of the system. I dove into unknown pitch black waters (literally) and explored the system on my own, while holding my breath from air pocket to air pocket. Eventually, I found an enormous cave that was so quiet, I could only hear my heart beating in the black still air. This cave had a beach and remnants of others that had been there before me (extinguished candles among the rock walls). I had an underwater dive light with me and turned it off to get the full darkened experience. Pitch black with absolutely no sound. Eerie.

The bridge you see me jump off is the Hana bridge. Sometimes the water below is tranquil and filled with mellow pools but after a rain upstream, it can rage like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Beautiful place. Sorry the video is so grainy, it was shot in 1992.

This is a rattlesnake. Do you know what kind of rattlesnake this is. Comment below, and I will let you know. One of these types of snakes bit my father-in-law about two months ago. He is doing much better now.

Three different snakes in three days. A couple of rattlesnakes and a gopher snake. I think the two rattlesnakes are southern Pacific rattlesnakes. What do you think? #snakes #snake

This cute little aquatic garter snake was just sitting on the trail, warming itself. It looked like a stick until we got close enough. Then it bounced off the trail.
