Seattle to Santa Barbara Sailboat Delivery

Delivering a boat from Seattle to Santa Barbara in the wintertime is no easy task. I was First Mate on this delivery of a Jeanneau 469, with Assen being captain and the owner, Dan on board as crew.

After quickly provisioning, we left around 2200 and motor-sailed all through the night. There was a fair amount of boat traffic and crossing into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the crossing currents pushed the boat around.
We also had to dodge a lot of large logs (boat killers) that were in the water all around us.
Once we got into the Pacific Ocean, about 20 hours after departing, we had a new challenge dodging crab pots.
We were lucky for a while and did not hit any crab pots but then our luck ran out. Once we ran over the buoys and line, we knew exactly what had happened. Of course, it happened in the middle of the night. We engaged the motor forward and backward and forwards and backward until we untangled most of the line. We still did have a huge amount of it stuck around the propeller.
We pulled into the nearest safe harbor and the owner, Dan, decided to dive on his boat and cut away the crab pot line. Our sail was much more enjoyable after that.
During our trip south, we saw humpback whales, gray whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, and much more marine life.
We motor sailed the entire way to beat a storm that was right on our heels. We got most of the way through without any incident. On the last day, we had to bash our way into Santa Barbara but made it safely. Another safe boat delivery
A little over 1,100 miles in 7 days. Not too bad for a winter sail.
