Pacific Ocean Cave Kayaking

Want to go cave kayaking or just kayaking in general?

The Adventure Travelers were traveling down the amazing southern coast of Oregon and wanted to experience adventure travel in Oregon. We chose South Coast Tours because they had short trips that would allow us to kayak on the Pacific Coast of Oregon.

We enjoy reviewing adventure travel companies because we feel our experiences are valuable to others.

South Coast Tours is located in Port Orford, Oregon in a small marina type area. The drive in the early morning was spectacular because the fog was sitting on the nearby bays and inlets. We found the location at 300 Dock Road in a tiny building in the parking lot. You can spot the building if you look for the yellow kayaks.

The operation has everything you need except bring your own water, snacks and sunscreen. After getting fitted into your wet-suit, life vest, booties and paddles, you are ready to walk down to the water. The short hike to the shore was easy and the kayaks were all ready and waiting for the group of about 9 people.

The safety briefing was great because the guide and owner, Dave Lacey, was patient and made sure to get to everyone.

Anytime you are adventuring with a tour company, you should expect all levels of experience.

We eased into the water and immediately we were kayaking in bull kelp and small, rolling swells. Dave stopped many times to point out vegetation, sea animals and historical areas that make this tour unique.

After assessing our collective ability, Dave decided to lead us into and around a few caves and small inlets. After we passed that test, we braved the open ocean for a few minutes to arrive in a stunning cove. There we pondered the beauty and saw harbor seals and marine birds.

The 2.5 hour tour was just right and offered a perfect blend of open ocean, sea caves, animals and other weird stuff in the ocean which you just have to see to believe.

After we returned our gear and changed in a convenient bathroom we were ready for another adventure!

South Coast Tours also provides surf lessons, stand up paddle boarding, tours down the Wild River Coast estuaries, fishing and Roque River kayaking.
