How to Empty the Black & Grey Tanks in an RV or Camper

How to Empty the Black & Grey Tanks in an RV or Camper

Always protect yourself from dirty (sewer) water by using gloves and bleach wipes for clean up.

Most RV campsites have the ability to either connect to a dump directly at the campsite or one on the property. Be sure to know where the dump site is before you settle into your campsite. It can make a difference when you are planning your exit strategy from the campsite.

In addition, never drive too far on a full black tank. Trust us, we had to do it once and learned from our experience. It shakes things around and creates a terrible smell. ALWAYS DUMP BEFORE GETTING ON THE ROAD!

Every RV is different so this video if for a 2018 Forest River, Sunseeker, Class C, 32 feet, model 3010DS.

Attach “Dump Hose” to Camp Site Sewer Line
In Driver’s Side Rear Compartment – Put on Black Sewer Gloves
In Driver’s Side Rear Compartment, find the sewer hose “slinky” and run it from RV to Camp Site Sewer Line – The Sewer hose will lay on top of the “slinky”
Ensure BOTH Black and Grey tank valves are CLOSED (all the way in) BEFORE you unclamp RV Sewer Cap
Unscrew the Beige Round Thru-Hole and place behind sewer in the same compartment
Feed the Green RV Sewage Hose up through the Thru-Hole and connect to the RV Sewer Pipe
Close the Two Green Clamps around the Green RV Sewage Hose and ensure it is Fully Connected and SECURE
Place the Handle Portion of the Green RV Sewage Hose firmly and securely in the Camp Site Sewer Line
If you need to, place a rock or something solid on the Green RV Sewage Hose to ensure it does not move or come out, when dumping
DUMP the Black Water FIRST – Once everything is connected correctly, you can dump the Black Water tank – Simply Pull the Black handle and all the Black Waste will dump using gravity
IMPORTANT – When all the Black Water is dumped – ENSURE YOU CLOSE THE BLACK HANDLE VALVE
Next – DUMP the Grey Water – Simply Pull the Grey handle and all the Grey Water will dump using gravity
IMPORTANT – When all the Grey Water is dumped – ENSURE YOU CLOSE THE GREY HANDLE VALVE
It may sound complicated and time-consuming at first, but it’s really easy, once you set up a routine. I leave ALL the valves closed and only dump the tanks when the tanks are getting full. This reduces quite a bit of the smell since everything is going in the tanks and not sitting in your Green RV Sewage Hose. You can always check the tank levels on the RV Convenience Console inside the RV (on the living room wall)
Typically, if you dump the Black Waste first, and then dump the Grey Water afterward, the Grey Water cleans the hose and you won’t have to clean it, using fresh water.
ONLY USE TOILET PAPER THAT BREAKS DOWN EASILY! The Adventure Travelers TP is always provided on our RV.
