Hiking Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Let’s do some inner canyon hiking at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We take the South Rim Route, the Gunnison Route which is the most traveled hiking trail. It is a extremely strenuous hike and about 1/3 of the way down, there is an 80 foot chain that assists your climb down the mountain. The vertical drop is 1,800 feet in 1.5 miles. If you want to stay overnight, there are three campsites available for hikers.

To get to this route, you first need to obtain a Wilderness Permit at the Ranger Station/Visitor Center. Once you get your permit, follow the trail from the S. Rim Visitor Center down to The Oak Flat Trail and turn right at the first junction. You will switch back a few times and then find the Wilderness Permit Required sign. This sign marks the beginning of the route. Continue the steep descent down to the chain and continue down the drainage. You will know you arrived when you get to the river. There is a pit toilet and campsites available near the river.

There are two other South Rim hikes, the Warner Route, which is the longest route and the Tomichi Route which is the steepest route and full of loose rocks and full sun exposure.

The North Rim has three different routes, the S.O.B. Draw which is known for its poison ivy, the Long Draw which brings hikers into the narrowest parts of the canyon, and the Slide Draw which is extremely steep with loose rocks and poor footing.

As with all hikes in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, you must possess a Wilderness Use Permit. Also, no pets, glass containers, collecting, hunting or fires are allowed. Follow the Leave No Trace principles.

Be prepared for self rescue and an overnight journey, if you cannot make it back up or if you get injured.

This was an amazing hike but one of our hardest.

Hope you liked the video.
