ULTIMATE boat life upgrade for OFF-GRID living

After spending time in a marina in Panama fixing their engine, Teulu Tribe was finally able to collect a package they had been dreaming about for years – a watermaker! With 500L of water currently onboard and plans for a big Pacific crossing next year, they needed the watermaker now.

The team spent weeks preparing and finally found the perfect spot to install their Rayman water maker under their bed. They also mounted the mount for the membranes, connected hoses, installed a brine overboard fitting, and ran an auto flush hose to the tanks.

Why They Chose a Watermaker

Teulu Tribe’s motivation for getting a water maker was the improved standard of living it would provide. With limited water on board, they experienced difficulties while in marinas and ran out of water on some occasions. A watermaker would allow them to have fresh water for showers and dishwashing.

Choosing the Right Watermaker

The team was torn between two brands but ultimately chose Rayman because it ticked all their boxes and had excellent recommendations from other users like Mad’s from Sailing La Vie. The Rayman model they chose could produce 100-150L of water per hour.

Technical Considerations

The high-capacity AC powered watermaker was chosen over a DC model because it could produce more water in an hour with similar power usage. Teulu Tribe also preferred to run the pump less frequently due to its noise level.

The Install

The watermaker installation took over a week, with many challenges and issues encountered along the way. The team had to modify brackets and PVC extenders and faced epoxy-related issues in the process.

Testing the Watermaker

Due to water quality concerns, Teulu Tribe could not test their newly installed watermaker at their marina. Instead, they planned to test it once they moved to Costa Rica and eventually Mexico.

A Special Sailing Day

In the meantime, Teulu Tribe received an invitation from friends on another sailboat to join them for a day of sailing. While at sea, they met up with Ian and Gabby who were testing their own hydrogen system and making their final preparations before starting their Pacific Crossing.

The team discussed the new watermaker’s challenges, successes, and experiences, while enjoying the day on the open sea. Although it was sad to say goodbye afterward, Teulu Tribe knew that they too would be embarking on their own incredible adventures soon.

For years we have based our sailing passage around which marinas we will fill up our water tanks, but...now in the Pacific, that is becoming trickier and trickier. Until now.

*About Us*
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.

However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.

We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit
