Impulsive Ideas: Can We Pull This Sail Off? (Boat Life)
Welcome back to another episode of Boat Life! Today, we fly to the Galapagos Islands and take part in an impromptu sailing adventure. Join Becca, Bobby, and Zach as they pick up anchor for the first time, single-handedly navigate their sailboat through treacherous waters, and experience a truly unique voyage.
Journey to the Galapagos Islands
Our adventurous trio decided to take on an impulsive challenge of helping a friend transport his catamaran from the Galapagos Islands back to Costa Rica. With minimal planning, they embarked on their epic journey. Becca and her mom at Dolphin Quest had to make preparations for departure as well. The crew managed to book flights and set off on this remarkable adventure with only a rough itinerary in mind.
Sailing in the Galapagos
Upon arriving in the Galapagos, Becca, Bobby, and Zach settled on their sailboat before heading out to explore. One of their first destinations was the El Chato Ranch, where they encountered the awe-inspiring Giant Tortoises that roam freely through the sanctuary. These enormous creatures can weigh up to 250 kg (551 lbs), making them a true marvel of nature.
Surfing and Charles Darwin Research Center
A brief surf session on one of the Galapagos’ magnificent beaches allowed the crew to unwind from their travels. After that, they visited the esteemed Charles Darwin Research Center to learn about conservation efforts and witness the now-extinct Lonesome George tortoise exhibit. This incredible creature’s species died out with him, making him a conservation icon.
Experiencing Nature in the Galapagos
The Galapagos Islands are home to countless wonders. The crew was captivated by the Starlink dishes dotting nearly every other house on their islands and even had close encounters with blacktip reef sharks surrounding their sailboat. It’s no wonder that this unspoiled paradise holds a special place in travelers’ hearts.

The impulsive adventure doesn’t end there! Stay tuned next week as the crew ventures off shore, crossing both the equator and the international date line. Don’t miss this heart-stopping journey as they push themselves to new limits on their sailing voyage!
We did NOT see that passage on the horizon (anytime soon to say the least). We have been sailing North from Panama to Mexico on our 40ft sailing boat, but now, we are in Santa Cruz, Galapagos, preparing to sail 750 more nautical miles, on a different boat. How? What? Where? When?

*About Us*
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit
