Caught in a SUDDEN Storm at SEA on a SMALL Boat // Teulu Tribe
August 12, 2024 by Teulu Tribe | Language: EN Play Time: 00:40:07 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

In an exhilarating tale of courage and resilience, the Teulu Tribe shares their harrowing experience of surviving a sudden 50-knot windstorm while sailing from Costa Rica to Nicaragua. This episode is a testament to how even the most unexpected storms can be navigated with the right preparation and mindset.
Uncharted Waters
As the Teulu Tribe set sail from Costa Rica, little did they know that they were about to encounter one of their toughest challenges yet. The decision to head for Nicaragua promised an adventure of a lifetime but also brought with it uncharted waters and unforeseen weather conditions.
Sudden Storm Encounter
What began as a beautiful day, with the sailboat effortlessly gliding across the ocean at speeds of up to seven knots, turned into a dramatic confrontation with nature’s fury. The wind suddenly picked up from nothing to an alarming 50 knots within just a few minutes. This was no ordinary storm; it tested every ounce of their preparation and skill.
Immediate Actions
Faced with this unexpected turn, the Teulu Tribe reacted swiftly. They knew that hesitation would only exacerbate their situation. With quick thinking and teamwork, they managed to reef the sails to reduce stress on the boat and keep it under control. The main and mizen were brought down to a manageable size, reducing their potential to capsize or cause severe damage.
Navigating the Storm
The next few hours were a tense roller-coaster ride as they navigated through the storm, constantly adjusting their course to counteract the massive gusts of wind. The boat, under bare poles and relying on its keel for stability, was thrown around mercilessly by the tempestuous seas. But the crew remained focused on their objective: to see this through and come out on the other side.
Safety and Communication
The importance of safety equipment cannot be overstated. In addition to their boat’s capabilities, the Teulu Tribe had radios for communication with nearby boats and a radar system to monitor the storm’s progress. These tools were crucial in making informed decisions under pressure.
Lessons Learned
The Teulu Tribe emerged from this experience more aware of the unpredictability of weather patterns at sea. They emphasized the value of preparedness, constant vigilance, and quick decision-making. The ability to work together efficiently under pressure was undoubtedly a key factor in their successful navigation of the storm.
A New Beginning
After surviving the storm, the team sailed into Nicaragua, feeling a renewed sense of appreciation for their skills and each other’s company. Despite facing a near-impossible challenge, they didn’t just survive; they thrived. This episode is more than a story of overcoming adversity at sea. It’s about the indomitable human spirit, resilience, and the strength found in unity.
Adventure Continues
The journey to Nicaragua was just the beginning for the Teulu Tribe. As they explored the shores and marveled at the local wildlife, it became clear that no storm could dampen their spirits or desire for adventure. Their voyage continues with more tales of excitement, exploration, and the joy of discovering new horizons.
Final Thoughts
In reflection, the Teulu Tribe’s encounter with the storm serves as both a warning and an inspiration. To all those embarking on their own journeys, whether on land or sea, remember that adversity is inevitable, but it’s how we navigate through these challenges that defines us.
Well, it finally happened. Our first storm at sea, and boy was it a wild one, but it almost felt like the two years were preparing us for this very moment. So, grab a brew and listening to the howl of the wind as it rattles our rigging and sends us on a course we didn't expect to be on.

*About Us*
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit
