More progress on our streamlined towed inspection ROV. This unit is being built to be towed behind a sidescan sonar at 3000 feet so it can fly off to the side to visually inspect a target located by the side scan. The only connection to the surface will be two little copper wires and getting good video is the main goal. Of course actually finding a target the size of an amphora in pitch black is the first task. The side scan will give us the general heading but we also plan to equip the ROV with a scanning sonar, specifically Lowrances’s new Spotlight Scan to find the target while it’s still 30 meters away.
