We are building a towed inspection ROV to explorer the ocean 3000 ft down. Only a single twisted pair cable will connect it to the surface ship, so getting a working communication link was first priority. VDSL2, the latest standard in Digital Subscriber Line technology has impressively solved the problem, extending 40 Mbs Ethernet 1Km below the waves. The next step is testing it with 4 – full HD IP video cameras. And Experiential Education — learning by doing. You’re invited to help. Comments and ideas are welcomed.
