We're building a 75ft steel motorsailor using the origami building process. In this video we open the hull up to set the beam dimensions, level it, do some check measurements, and talk about what we could have done differently.
Done Son! From building a pattern, furnace, melting the aluminum bronze, casting, machining and balancing. ...And we now have 2 sets of custom 37" diameter blades for our Hundested VP3, 3 blade controllable pitch propeller hub. They are worth $15,600 if...
It's asking a lot of our CNC plasma/router table but with help from Super Dave we turned it into a successful CNC lathe so we could mill the grooves in our home make propeller blades that will fit our Hundested Controllable Pitch Propeller system.
This is why we have chosen to wire weld our hull, even in the overhead positions. I'm an not telling you it's the best choice for you. I'm showing you why it's the best choice for me. So don't go and get all religious on me if you worship the Stick God....
"And the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh." Or in the words of the Beatles: "One thing I can tell you is you got to be Free. Come together, right now, over me."
Until it starts looking like a boat, you don't really feel like you're working on a boat. Even though we've been working toward this for six years, it finally feels like our journey has begun. -- Kay
If I was better at using a measuring tape I might have avoided 4 days of shuffling75 foot long, 5 ton plates of steel. But the upside is that both sides of the hull are identical so any problems during the bending process can not be blamed on my measuring...
Do you need a 180 pound spade boat anchor when you don't even have a boat? We did. So someday when we finish building our boat an put it in the water; we'll be all set to keep it where we park it.
We're building a 74 ft steel sailboat in our front yard. And we're doing it for the best reason there is to build a boat. We want to. So don't tell us "you'll never finish", "your wasting money', we've hear all of the warnings and we do not fear our dr...
You can braze aluminum bronze with MIG. I suck at this but it worked. This started by going to Airgas and asking questions until they got one of their instructors to give me an impromptu class on MIG welding Aluminum Bronze. Give me 1/2" thick material, ...
Six propeller blades are cast and ready for final machining and along the way we learned several lessons and got some great tips for our patterns and sodium silica sand from our local foundries.
How to build your own dueling tree. Works good enough for 9mm but not 38s, and you can shoot anything but armor piercing at AR500. Have fun!

Our second try at casting a propeller blade for our Hundested variable pitch control system was a success but only barely. We had better flask, a following board, and lots of luck. We now know to wax the pattern when using sodium silica sand so next time...
Our first attempt at casting one of our 55 pound propeller blades for our Hundested Controllable Pitch Propeller system went completely into the ditch, but we took away a lot of good information.
If we get this one part right it will save us from buying $3,400 of parts from Hundested. Great to pay for the lathe with the first part!
