We tested a Pro Weld CD-312 Stud Welder for attaching 5/16″ 304 Stainless studs to 1/4″ mild steel plate. We need over 800 of these for our fuel and water tank hatches. The CD Stud Gun rents for about $250 a week. The machine we need for getting great welds on 5/16″ studs is an Arc Stud Welder that use 600 to 700 amps. Unfortunately they rent for over $2000 a week and require 3-Phase power which would mean renting a huge generator as well. So it looks like we are back to plan A. Drill-n-Tap or plan C and TIG weld the studs on.
