In 1894 Simon Lake had failed to raise any money for building his Argonaut I submarine. But he was not going to give up on his boy hood dreams of a real submarine like the Nautilus from “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”. Instead he built the Argonaut Jr., a proof of concept submarine from pine boards, canvas, and tar. His success with the Argonaut Jr. led to the Argonaut I and hundreds of miles of undersea travel and adventure salvaging cargo from sunken ships.
The Argonaut Jr. 2010 is a recreation of Simon Lake’s Argonaut Jr. and just as successful. This video follows the idea that became the Argonaut I as it traveled through history.
