Episode Title: [Tally Ho runs aground! Prop and gearbox issues.]
Recently, the YouTube channel Sampson Boat Co. has released a fascinating video titled ‘Tally Ho runs aground! Prop and gearbox issues.’ This episode follows boat builder Leo, who purchased an old wooden sailing boat for just $1. Since then, he’s been working tirelessly to rebuild it with help from many talented individuals.
In their previous video, the team went out for a successful sea trial with Tally Ho, but they did notice an ‘over-propping’ issue. The term refers to a mismatch between the angle of the propeller blades and how fast other parts of the system – such as engine and gearbox – turn. This is quite common in sailing vessels, and fortunately, adjusting the pitch of this particular style of propeller can solve it relatively easily.
The engine’s intended RPM is 2800, but the team can only achieve around 2000 RPM because the propeller, currently set too coarse, exerts too much strain on it. This problem doesn’t affect their current speed at around 8 knots, but addressing this issue ensures engine warranty validity and avoids potential damages. Thus, a diver was sent down to adjust the pitch.
In their second sea trial, Tally Ho showed minor improvements in engine performance. However, after clearing a narrow pass through shallow waters (which caused quite the spectacle of Leo and his crew maneuvering through it), they faced further setbacks – leading them to run aground intentionally, only to realize that something larger was amiss with the propeller situation.
Despite adjusting the pitch of their propeller, it wasn’t enough to fully resolve Tally Ho’s performance issues – the boat couldn’t achieve its optimal RPM. The crew reached out to Berry Prop for guidance; they said a half-turn adjustment could be tried, although that too didn’t yield the desired results.
A significant breakthrough occurred when it was discovered that because of a communication error years prior, the incorrect gearbox had been installed on the engine. This meant that the propeller and propshaft were rotating 2.5 times for every one engine rotation – leading to excessive resistance. It became evident why their initial attempts to adjust the propeller weren’t as successful.
With this new information, Leo now must decide between two routes for rectifying the situation: replacing the existing 2:1 ratio gearbox with a slower 2.5:1 or swapping out the oversized propeller. Either option presents its challenges and financial implications – either requiring extensive labor and possibly higher costs associated with removing and replacing parts.
While this unexpected complication is undeniably frustrating, Leo’s dedication to the Tally Ho project remains steadfast. He plans on assessing the pros and cons of each possible solution carefully, ensuring an optimal decision that will benefit the boat in the long run. The crew is hopeful for a summer filled with sailing adventures on their restored vessel.
Leo took this opportunity to express gratitude towards his viewers for their continuous support, emphasizing how it significantly aids the restoration project’s progression. Financial donations and overall encouragement help sustain these videos’ production quality.
For now, Tally Ho’s journey is temporarily on hold as Leo contemplates the next steps for their beloved boat. Despite minor setbacks, this sailing project promises an exciting summer ahead when fully restored and operational.

EPISODE 190
In this episode; After talking about our propeller pitch issues we go out for a second sea trial, and Tally Ho runs aground at low tide. Later, after some other work, we discover that our prop issue is a deeper problem that we thought, and could require changing our gearbox or hauling Tally Ho out of the water again.
