TALLY HO departs - Leaving harbour and heading North!

The Tally Ho departs her home port of Port Towns then Bay and begins the adventure she was built for, 85 years ago, as part of our great-grandfather’s transatlantic racing yacht program. Her crew of ten sailors embark on a journey to the San Juan Islands that would ultimately span over two months. The preparation and planning required to take such an antique boat to sea is immense. The vessel needs to be meticulously prepared to face open-ocean conditions. A few years prior, Leo had purchased Tally Ho for just one US dollar, intending to rebuild her into the gleaming masterpiece she is today.

Preparing Tally Ho For Departure

In the days leading up to departure, several important tasks were undertaken. Among these was the installation of a custom-built bronze chain stripper or chain peeler. This device attaches to the capstan on the foredeck and helps the anchor chain come away from the gypsy (the cradle that holds the anchor chain) and store properly in the locker. The crew also had to stock the boat with food and tools for their summer adventure, making sure everything would be in order once they set sail. They did not hold back; an assortment of bread, potatoes, beans, sundried tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, toilet paper, and more filled their compartments. Even flour was on board for when someone desired to bake cookies. Leo’s attention to detail was evident from the start as he installed the systems, paying meticulous care and devotion to each aspect of her restoration, setting the bar exceptionally high for anyone who followed in his footsteps.

The Crew Embarks on Their Journey

Before departure, Leo’s friend Joe checked and commended the work done by both Leo and his team. With years of experience working on this vessel together, it was apparent they shared mutual respect and admiration for each other’s skills. The boat’s crew included a wide array of people – from experienced professionals like Leo to first-timers looking to dip their toes into maritime adventures. Despite different backgrounds or skills, everyone united under one mission: To sail the legendary Tally Ho as intended.

The Journey Across The Strait

Setting off into unknown waters always brings with it a sense of trepidation, yet an underlying excitement permeated throughout the entire group. Even before departure, they could feel this new chapter beginning. The winds picked up just as they approached their first destination – the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It proved to be an unexpectedly pleasant surprise since initially, there were no plans to set sail during the crossing. They instead used this time for securing remaining items and getting things sorted below deck.

Exploration in The San Juan Islands

As they neared the entrance of the strait leading to the San Juans, an old friend and fellow boat owner named Nick awaited them. Along with other friends, they were on a Thunderbird – another local classic sailboat. Upon arriving at their destination, everyone looked forward to resting up in readiness for whatever lay ahead on the following day. Their plans included rafting together with Nick’s yacht and enjoying dinner followed by sleep; something sorely needed after grueling last-minute preparations.

Concluding Thoughts

As they completed their first journey since Tally Ho’s reconstruction, there was a palpable feeling of accomplishment. However, they understood that the real work would continue during the voyage and after returning in autumn. Tally Ho is truly a remarkable vessel with an incredible backstory. Leo has brought her back to life through tireless dedication, turning her into more than just a floating relic – she now becomes part of our modern world, offering new memories for everyone lucky enough to set foot on board.
