In this thrilling episode, join Leo as he and his team set sail on an unforgettable voyage north in their self-steering gaff cutter Talo. Follow the crew through treacherous waters along the remote coastlines of British Columbia while they put the newly installed jackyard topsail to the test for the first time.
After leaving the San Juan Islands behind, Leo and his crew head north to Canoe Cove, marking Talo’s entry into Canada. From there, they sail through the Gulf Islands before joining another historic wooden sailing vessel, Dorothy (the oldest Canadian sailing boat still in service).
In light winds, this episode documents their first-time attempt at deploying a jackyard topsail, adding an additional layer of height and sail area to Talo’s rig. The process proves to be challenging but rewarding for the crew as they balance the extra effort with the increased efficiency in light airs.
As the adventure progresses northward along British Columbia’s rugged coastlines, the crew encounters and navigates numerous challenges – including tidal rapids, whirlpools, narrow channels filled with traffic, and strong currents. Despite these obstacles, they make their way to Port McNeill in northern Vancouver Island, where supplies and provisions for further travel are stocked up.
The final stretch of the journey sees them approaching Cape Caution, the first time Talo leaves behind protected waters to venture into the open Pacific. Leo notes that this leg is significantly less difficult than he initially feared thanks in part to good planning and preparation – though he also admits that luck plays a significant role in such maritime endeavors.
This journey not only highlights the technical aspects of sailing Talo but underscores how teamwork, skillful navigation, and an unwavering spirit have led Leo’s team through unpredictable conditions. As they continue on their voyage towards Haida Gwaii and beyond, one thing remains certain – Leo and his crew are ready to face whatever challenges await them in their ongoing exploration of North America’s spectacular coastlines.
Throughout the video, Leo expresses his gratitude for those who have supported this ambitious project. Donations and support from viewers allow this documentary series to continue creating high-quality content while sailing historical boats like Talo. EPISODE 197
In this video we sail TALLY HO North, all the way up the inside coast of Vancouver Island, BC. We hoist our Jackyard Topsail for the first time (with a small snag!), we test our Autopilot / Self-steering gear, and we transit some crazy rapids. We also run into some dolphins, say goodbye to some friends, and swim in a glorious lake. Oh… and we also find the "largest burl in the world"!
