Sailing to Lampedusa and Tunisia
Sam Holmes sets out on another exciting sailing adventure, this time heading from Lampedusa to Tunisia. Join him as he details his journey, the challenges encountered, and the lessons learned along the way.Having sailed for about half a day towards his destination, Sam decides it’s the perfect moment to raise the sails and embrace the wind on their beam reach. As the stars shine brightly above them, Lampedusa lies in the distance, with the boat moving at a steady pace of three knots. However, Sam realizes that he might have to slow down to avoid arriving too early or missing the best possible wind conditions.
Exploration in Lampedusa
Sam’s journey includes a stop in Lampedusa, where he shares an interesting encounter with the locals and their connection to lamps, as it’s known for being the place where all the lamps come from. Despite not quite finding his pizza fix at first, Sam manages to settle for some pasta instead.
Anchoring in Tunisia
Continuing on to Tunisia, Sam faces an unexpected challenge with another boat’s anchorage. The nearby vessel is anchored unnervingly close to his own, making their boats bump into one another and causing frustration for Sam.
Navigating the Waters
Sam navigates the waters of Tunisia with ease, sailing in beautiful conditions. However, he soon realizes that his autopilot needs some adjustments and decides to take action by improving its functioning.
Passage to Monastir
Having stamped his passport at the police station, Sam sets out from Lampedusa, heading towards Monastir in Tunisia. With the wind in their favor and a 94 nautical mile journey ahead of them, they embark on an overnight sail that should take around 24 hours to complete.
Marina Experience
Arriving in Tunisia and officially checked-in, Sam shares his experiences at the marina. Despite anticipating a lot of bureaucracy, the process was smoother than expected. He also makes sure to mention that Tunisian boat work can be more cost-effective compared to other European countries.
Projects and Maintenance
During his stay in Tunisia, Sam works on several projects and maintenance tasks. These include the installation of lifelines, creating a better lid for his chain pipe, wiring an appropriate power socket, hanging a dehumidifier to reduce mold, fixing the water pump that had been leaking, and more.
The Journey’s Challenges
While the overall journey is enjoyable and fulfilling for Sam, he does discuss some challenges, such as bureaucratic difficulties during his boat inspection and checking out process. These issues lead to frustrations and an invasive feeling as they inspect every aspect of his boat.
Final Thoughts
Sam ends the video by reflecting on his experience in Tunisia, sharing that despite the challenges and difficulties encountered during check-out procedures, the overall trip was a positive one. He also mentions some thoughts on revisiting Tunisia and shares insights about its affordability for boat work compared to other European countries.
Next Adventures
To conclude, Sam looks forward to his upcoming adventures sailing over to Pick Up Anoline, exploring Gibraltar, and venturing into Morocco. His enthusiasm for these journeys continues as he eagerly shares the experiences of traversing new territories in the vast expanse of the sea.
