We caught our first BIG FISH & saw oodles of whales

Hello and thanks for joining us again on our Sailing Ocean Life, SOL.

We feel like we’ve found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow here at the amazing and beautiful Abrolhos islands, I mean considering what we’ve experienced, we never thought we’d get to the Abrolhos, but here we are and it’s crazy, we’re so grateful!

This week we take a sneaky peek on Rat Island, the home away from home for cray fisherman, we were blessed to get a tour of a “fisherman’s shack”, however “shack” doesn’t quite depict this comfortable, well appointed, luxury villa, it’s glamping at it’s finest. Tim, the shack owner, also encouraged us to go and say hello to the friendly sealions that have found a home on his jetty. It was an epic adventure!
We sail on to a mooring ball called “Third Sister”, but the experience was so uncomfortable, neither of us filmed it. So, an early start saw us arrive at the stunning Turtle Bay where I was honoured to have another play with my gorgeous sealion friend, from what I’ve experienced, they just love and welcome mates to frolic with.

When we managed to download new weather maps after 4 days of no internet, we realised there was strong winds approaching which would keep us “stuck” in the Abrolhos for another 5-7 days, so we made the decision to sail to Port Gregory to take shelter.

Here we enjoy the beauty of the pretty pink lake and explore this cute little town, delighting in the hot showers and handy washing machines before we do our first overnight sail. Mild winds were expected, with a top of 12-15 knots, but what we actually experienced was harrowing 12 hours of sailing in pitch black with huge swell and a tail wind that threatened to whip the boom across on an accidental jibe at any second. And without an autopilot to keep us on track, it meant we had to have our wits about us every minute.

We’re so blessed to have access to some amazing musical talent so we thank the artists below for their contribution to this video:
