IMPOUNDED on Day Two of Sailing… - Eps 75
We took down the “For Sale” sign. And just like that, she was officially ours.
After months of paperwork, negotiations and nerves, we finally became the owners of our 2020 Leopard 40 catamaran. Our broker walked us through the systems, switches and seacocks (and we quickly realised how much we still have to learn), and we spent our very first evening onboard soaking in the surreal feeling that this floating home now belonged to us.
The first night aboard - No champagne. No big celebration. Just a quiet moment on the front deck… and a very confident salty marina cat who came aboard to inspect the new tenants.
Then it was time to leave the marina and clear out of the British Virgin Islands properly.
In this episode we also share what the BVI check-in and check-out process involves, why clearing out with Customs and Immigration is essential when sailing internationally, and what documents you need before heading to your next country.
Mooring ball secured. Passports stamped. Departure papers in hand.
No marina booking. No return date. We were officially free.
But freedom didn’t last long.
After 17 hours of beating into the wind on our maiden sail, we arrived in Sint Maarten… only to have our boat impounded while we rushed to sort out our Australian registration.
We’ll share the full impound story next episode — what happened, why it happened, and what we learned the hard way.
For now, we’re reflecting on how quickly cruising life can shift from dream to reality… and how lucky we still are to be “stuck” in this half-French, half-Dutch Caribbean paradise.
