Hello! This is the first episode of First Mate And Captain! I really appreciate you watching, I’m not 100% happy with the video, I really want to improve the quality in the future! Better content and I’ve really got to get better with zooming and focusing! and I need better equipment to help make filming easier, hang in there, things will only get better from here!

Also, I have to say, its a bit strange filming everything at first, but it’s getting more natural, so the content should start flowing easier soon!

A little about myself! I’m the First Mate on Providence Sail Cargo and Captain of SV Dagon! I want to share my life at sea with everyone. Come find out what happens on a 1903 built Gaff Rigged Tall Ship, and a 1956 built cutter rigged Sailboat!

As First Mate aboard Providence, I travel weekly on a 4 day cargo run through the PNWs southern gulf Islands, doing that, I meet amazing people, sail a ton, seeing amazing things and my duties are to do maintenance projects, rigging and do my best to keep the boat ship shape! All of which I will share with you! and on MY boat, Dagon, I just fix broken things, break things and have wild sailing adventures!

See what it takes to sail and maintain two wooden boats, a Tall ship from 1903 and a Sail Boat from 1956. Hopefully we all learn something!

I love what I do and hope you will follow along as we try to push for greener alternatives for shipping local goods and passengers aboard Providence and have good adventures aboard Dagon, and any other boat I happen to end up on.

Thank you for watching! I really appreciate it!

Captain Barry.

This Engine Breaks ALL the Rules

This 1962 Danish engine shouldn’t have been built when it was. While the world was building rockets, computers, and modern diesel engines, somebody was still building hot-bulb semi-diesels based on technology invented in the 1800s. Aboard Lady Hawk, I ...

Here’s The Plan… In Full

For months, people have been asking the same questions: What exactly is the business? Why tequila? Why aren’t we already in Mexico? When do we leave? This episode answers all of it. From commercial vessel requirements and liquor regulation to crew, inf...

The First Things We Built For Our Shipyard.

A shop needs two things: somewhere to put your tools, and somewhere to use them. This week we turn an antique chest into a toolbox and finish a massive torsion-box workbench as we continue building out the shipyard and laying the groundwork for our plan t...

We’re Bringing an Abandoned Shipyard Back to Life

We bought one old wooden ship. That was supposed to be the project. But somewhere along the way, the tools started piling up, the crew started growing, the old infrastructure started waking back up… and now it feels like we’re building something much...

I Bought a Wooden Ship… Then Needed a Lumber Van

Head to MarinerSpirit.com to support this project! I was about to spend $5000 on roughly 200 board feet of white oak for the restoration of Lady Hawk, our 1934 Danish wooden ship. Instead, we somehow ended up with MORE lumber… and a 1971 Dodge Tradesma...

The Deeper We Dug Into This Ship, The Weirder It Got

Lady Hawk is finally home in Canada, but before we can really begin working on her, we first have to uncover her. What started as a simple clean up quickly turned into something that felt more like archaeology. Every locker, shelf and compartment seemed t...
