Welcome back sailor, this is episode 34 of our series featuring winter adventures aboard Thunderchild with your favorite adventurers Barry and Hailly. Prepare yourselves for a chilly journey filled with boat projects and thrilling expeditions.

Thriving in the Cold Canadian Winter

It’s no secret that winter can be a challenging time for those living aboard sailboats. Despite the frosty temperatures, Barry and Hailly have found various ways to stay active on their vessel, Thunderchild. From creating innovative shelving designs to maintaining the boat in top shape, they prove that you can embrace the colder months with an adventurous spirit.

Working on Winter Boat Projects

The winter months provide Barry and Hailly the opportunity to tackle numerous boat projects. They continue to build a cabinet, aiming for a sleek design that will match their personal style and add functional storage space aboard Thunderchild.

An Expedition to Gabriola Island

In this episode, Barry and Hailly share their experience of sailing through the Gulf Islands during the winter. They embarked on a two-day journey from Gabriola to Canoe Cove on Vancouver Island to help Nathan with his boat, Surf Scotter. The couple also explored the history behind Bill Garden’s island and his connection to the area.

Navigating Perah Helion

Upon their return from Gabriola Island, Barry and Hailly decide to utilize their time at the dock by working on another project – navigating Perry helion. The duo managed to successfully move Perah Helion off the docks onto their own mooring with help from Simon.

Improvements and Enhancements

Beyond the cabinetry, flooring, and storage projects, Barry is focused on enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of Thunderchild. By sealing epoxy on the deck, creating wine storage solutions, and adding stylish finishing touches throughout the boat, they aim to improve their onboard living experience.

This Engine Breaks ALL the Rules

This 1962 Danish engine shouldn’t have been built when it was. While the world was building rockets, computers, and modern diesel engines, somebody was still building hot-bulb semi-diesels based on technology invented in the 1800s. Aboard Lady Hawk, I ...

For months, people have been asking the same questions: What exactly is the business? Why tequila? Why aren’t we already in Mexico? When do we leave? This episode answers all of it. From commercial vessel requirements and liquor regulation to crew, inf...

The First Things We Built For Our Shipyard.

A shop needs two things: somewhere to put your tools, and somewhere to use them. This week we turn an antique chest into a toolbox and finish a massive torsion-box workbench as we continue building out the shipyard and laying the groundwork for our plan t...

We’re Bringing an Abandoned Shipyard Back to Life

We bought one old wooden ship. That was supposed to be the project. But somewhere along the way, the tools started piling up, the crew started growing, the old infrastructure started waking back up… and now it feels like we’re building something much...

I Bought a Wooden Ship… Then Needed a Lumber Van

Head to MarinerSpirit.com to support this project! I was about to spend $5000 on roughly 200 board feet of white oak for the restoration of Lady Hawk, our 1934 Danish wooden ship. Instead, we somehow ended up with MORE lumber… and a 1971 Dodge Tradesma...

The Deeper We Dug Into This Ship, The Weirder It Got

Lady Hawk is finally home in Canada, but before we can really begin working on her, we first have to uncover her. What started as a simple clean up quickly turned into something that felt more like archaeology. Every locker, shelf and compartment seemed t...
