Sailor Barry & Hailly Face Winter Storm on Their Wood Boat

In this episode of our sailing adventures in the Great Lakes, we experienced a major winter storm that challenged us like never before. Living aboard our lovely wooden boat in Canadau2019s chilly waters was tough during the freezing cold weather.

Dealing with Power Outages and Frozen Pipes

The power went out, as it often does on Gabriola Island when heavy snowstorms hit. With our water pipes frozen and no way to heat up hot water, we relied on an emergency solution that maintained the flow of warm water. We had to stay resourceful and think on our feet.

Warmth During the Storm: A Quick Fix and a Friend’s Generosity

A wood stove heater helped us keep warm while huddled together inside, trying not to let our thoughts drift towards what was happening outside. Luckily, Haley discovered a kind local friend who offered us access to a hose full of water and even had a shower for us!

Buddy’s Warm Embrace

Haley and I snuggled up under Buddy the Dog, seeking comfort in his furry embrace as we waited out the storm.

Staying Prepared: Solar Panels to Save the Day

To ensure future storms didn’t catch us off-guard again, we worked tirelessly to mount a 400-watt bifacial solar panel. With added efficiency, it helps us produce more power by catching sunlight both on top and bottom sides. The mounting position is sturdy and perfect for our boat’s davits.

The Kindness of Strangers: Generous Joe’s Offer

During this time, a chance encounter with generous local friend Joe brought warmth and comfort to us. He provided much-needed firewood as well as access to showers that we hadn’t experienced in over a week. Their kindness proved invaluable in our darkest hours.

Reflecting on the Experience

Though this winter storm experience tested us severely, it showed us that being resourceful and counting on local communities are key to surviving unexpected cold snaps aboard your wooden sailboat.

Final Thoughts

We learned a great deal from facing this harsh winter storm together. Our love for sailing and adventure only grows stronger as we continue our journey through Canada’s Great Lakes, braving nature in all its beauty – but also its fury!
