Sailing South: West Palm Beach to Miami Adventure

Embarking on a sailing trip from West Palm Beach to Miami, we faced the challenge of deciding between the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) and open ocean navigation. Our hope was to leave Florida before hurricane season began. The journey included encounters with strong currents, wildlife, and interactions with law enforcement along the way. The Used Main Sale With a budget of $350, we acquired an acceptable used mainsail that had not been severely reworn. This purchase marked the beginning of our sailing preparations. Deciding Between the ICW and Open Ocean Confronted with the decision to sail on the inside via the ICW or the outside along the open ocean, we faced several obstacles. The ICW presented issues such as bridges, traffic, and other conditions, while the open ocean route posed the risk of being bound to the sea without any anchorage points. Exploring Peanut Island and Dealing with Law Enforcement As we sailed towards Miami, we passed by Peanut Island where we observed fewer boaters than anticipated. However, the presence of law enforcement surrounded our efforts to access land via anchoring dinghies. We witnessed police officers removing usable dinghies from the water and preventing boaters from filming their actions. Confronting Marine Traffic in Miami Pump out, water, and navigating marine traffic posed additional challenges as we approached Miami. We encountered numerous cruise ships heading into the government cut, making it difficult for us to cross the large amount of marine traffic. Finding Safe Anchorage in No Name Harbor After exploring Miami’s unprotected anchorages, we found temporary safety at No Name Harbor, but were warned about the potential presence of police and dangers associated with abandoned vessels. We noted that this anchorage became popular among party boats, leaving behind a trail of litter and environmental concerns. The Dangers of Derelict Vessels in Miami Our interactions with local authorities intensified as we discussed the issue of derelict vessels and the potential options for Boat Owners. Officer Del Castillo confirmed that the city was dealing with many abandoned boats, posing safety risks to all boaters. A Race Against Time at Stadium Anchorage We sought shelter and respite at the well-protected stadium anchorage but were informed of an upcoming boating race. The authorities ordered us to relocate our vessel by the following day, which provided a perfect opportunity for me to reset the anchor. Conclusion: Navigating Solo and Confronting Challenges The journey from West Palm Beach to Miami presented various challenges, including navigation decisions, encounters with wildlife, law enforcement interactions, and the need to find safe anchorages amidst environmental concerns. Our experiences highlighted the importance of preparedness, flexibility, and resourcefulness in overcoming obstacles encountered while sailing.

What we learned in Cuba right away is that people appreciate it, but do not just want hand-outs. They want to be able to practice their professions and to contribute despite the lack of materials arriving regularly on the island. We saw this with the first...
