Fire Safety at Sea – Boat Safety Gear & Procedures For Boaters
In this video episode, we are diving into the critical topic of fire safety at sea. Fires on boats can happen in an instant, but having the right gear and knowing the procedures to follow can mean the difference between life and death.
Boat Safety Gear
We have various safety equipment on our boat, starting with fire extinguishers. We have three 2 kg fire extinguishers placed strategically throughout the vessel – one in the front cabin, another in the galley, and the last one in the back cabin. Additionally, we keep a fire blanket in the galley for emergency situations.
To ensure early detection of any smoke or flames, we have installed a smoke detector in our engine compartment. Moreover, we use a fire suppression unit which automatically activates to extinguish fires. It’s crucial to not open the door when fighting an engine room fire as this would only feed the flames with oxygen.
Servicing and Maintenance
All our safety gear, including the fire extinguishers, is serviced annually. We also check the batteries in our smoke detector regularly to ensure they are operational. Replacing these batteries happens yearly, coinciding with the servicing of the fire extinguishers.
Fire Procedures on Board
If a fire occurs, the first person to notice it should immediately shout ‘fire, fire, fire’ and retrieve the nearest fire extinguisher. They must point the nozzle at the base of the flames and pull the pin, using this opportunity to douse the fire.
Once the fire is being dealt with, a second person should activate the DSC alert and issue a Mayday call. This informs other vessels in the vicinity about the emergency situation on board our boat, potentially attracting help or further resources to fight the fire.
When Abandoning Ship
If a fire gets out of control and we can’t contain it, our priority shifts to getting everyone off the boat safely. We must distance ourselves from other boats in the area since our vessel may no longer be salvageable.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, keeping a vigilant eye on fire safety is vital for any boat owner or sailor. Always ensure your vessel is well-stocked with the proper gear and know what to do in case of an emergency.
