Do It Yourself Boat Safety Check for Peace of Mind!

In this video, my husband Simon demonstrates how to perform a boat safety audit on our sailboat Briken. A boat safety audit is an important step when you first get your boat and ensures that all the essential safety equipment is in place and up-to-date. The Importance of a Boat Safety Audit By conducting a boat safety audit, you will ensure that your boat’s safety gear is accounted for and in proper working order. This reduces stress while cruising and provides peace of mind during overnight passages or when challenges arise. What You Need For A Boat Safety Audit 1. List of all safety equipment required for your boat 2. Pen and paper, or a smartphone app to create a record of your findings 3. Time (about an hour) How To Perform A Boat Safety Audit 1. Start by checking life jackets and safety lines. Ensure they are properly maintained and serviced annually. 2. Inspect flares, fog horns, searchlights, first aid kits, and medical bags for proper functionality and service history. 3. Check fire extinguishers – Briken has oversized ones for added safety. 4. Locate and inspect the fire blanket and fire alarm. 5. Ensure an emergency tiller is available in case of main tiller failure. 6. Look at radar reflectors, throw bags, safety knives, jack lines, life rafts, horseshoes (for overboard recovery), danbuoy (distress signal), and additional flares. 7. Check all lights onboard, including torches, and replace batteries if necessary. 8. Finally, compile a one-to-two-page record of your findings detailing the location and service history of each piece of safety equipment. The Benefits of A Boat Safety Audit 1. You’ll have a clear record of all your safety gear and when it was last serviced. 2. Valuable time can be saved during potential critical situations by quickly locating equipment. 3. Peace of mind while cruising, especially on overnight passages. 4. Preparedness for unexpected situations ensures a calm response.
