Catamaran Versus Monohull - Which One Is Better?

Comparing Catamarans vs. Monohulls: Personal Insights

Simon recently hosted a thought-provoking video discussing the differences between catamarans and monohulls from the perspective of two experienced sailors who have had the opportunity to experience both types of vessels on Simon’s yacht, Britican. The couple that participated in the discussion spent time sailing on Britican last year and then tried out the catamaran this year. Their opinions reflect personal preferences based on their individual experiences and not necessarily a blanket statement for everyone. Being on a monohull offered an experience that was gritty, more raw and in tune with nature. The sailors noted they were closer to the water, felt salt spray more frequently, and had an overall feel of working together in harmony with the ocean. However, on the catamaran, the sailors found themselves at a higher elevation from the water which offered a smoother sail—albeit their experience lacked rough conditions to fully illustrate differences. Britican is beautifully crafted, spacious, and comfortable for a smaller number of people; the difference lies in one’s preference whether they are seeking an exhilarating sailing adventure (monohull), or more of a luxurious lifestyle aboard a catamaran. Each individual may find different aspects appealing depending on their intended experience with sailing. When questioned about what they preferred, one sailor mentioned that a monohull would be ideal for a solo sailing adventure, providing the authentic sail feel and exhilaration that he loves. Conversely, when entertaining family or friends, the catamaran offers ample space, allowing the experience to still be comfortable even without the element of rough sailing. This candid conversation highlights that each sailor had their own preference and reasons for liking either a monohull or a catamaran over the other, underscoring the importance of individual taste and desired adventure type in choosing between these two styles. To make an informed decision on whether you would prefer a monohull or a catamaran for your next sailing venture, Simon invites everyone to come sail with him and experience both types of vessels firsthand, asking questions and exploring what works best for their needs and preferences.
