We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit.
In this episode, we are preparing our boat to receive its new keel, but that doesn’t mean a simple sanding here and there… it means a lot of breaking and removing of big pieces that will need to be rebuilt before the new keel gets installed.
Removing the rudder was quite an adventurous activity. Nobody got hurt, but don’t try this at home.

Hi! We are Ben & MP and we now own a massive wooden schooner that needs A LOT of work done. Many people told us the boat we chose was doomed, but we refuse to settle on that thought and we are going to do whatever it takes to make this boat a happy sailor again. We are both rookies when it comes to boat ownership and carpentry, so this is going to be a steep learning curve for us which we are ready to embrace. Luckily we found an amazing team of shipwrights that accepted the challenge of bringing Yabá back to life. But we are not only watching them work, besides documenting everything, we are also very keen to learn so we can do as much as possible ourselves, always knowing when to leave it to the experts.
