Sailing Yabá’s Epic First Sail: Rigging Triumphs & Trials

After an intense week of preparations, the crew at Sailing Yabá is gearing up for their first-ever sail together, a milestone achieved after meticulously rigging their sails. This episode narrates their journey through challenges and successes, painting a vivid picture of their quest to get that perfect sail setup.

Initial Setup Struggles

It all begins with soft shackles made from Dynema and low friction rings, a crucial part for smooth sail handling. Despite following YouTube tutorials for making these soft shackles, the team faced hurdles. The goal was to use them as spindles for added sturdiness, epoxied in place with threaded bars leading down.

Mapping Out the Sail Positioning

The next step was determining the sail’s ideal placement. For their middle sail between the two masts, the crew experimented with various positions to avoid any obstruction yet ensure accessibility for quick adjustments. The beauty of using soft shackles lay in their adaptability, allowing the crew to fine-tune the sail positioning.

Stoppers Installation and Line Management

With soft shackles sorted, attention shifted to installing stoppers. These were crucial for managing sail lines effectively, ensuring smooth operation. The crew strategized on the best placement to minimize clutter and ensure easy reach during sailing.

The Main Sheet Challenge

The main sheet, crucial for adjusting the main sail, posed its unique set of problems. After experimenting with different placements and even considering built-in aluminum options, the crew settled on a placement that promised ease of use and aesthetic appeal.

Furling and Final Adjustments

The final stretch involved testing the furling system, a key component for rolling up the sails when not in use. Through trial and error, the team managed to roll up the sails correctly, ensuring they were ready for their first sail. Minor adjustments, like installing new pulleys and fastening lines securely, rounded off this critical phase.

The Journey Continues

With sails rigged, the excitement is palpable. Sailing Yabá is now one step closer to their dream of exploring the seas. While some projects like installing deck lighting and completing the navigation system are pending, they plan to tackle these during their voyage.

Anticipating the First Sail

As they prepare for their first sail, the team at Sailing Yabá reflects on the week’s achievements and looks forward to overcoming future challenges. The anticipation of the maiden voyage fills the air with excitement and determination.

The Ultimate Boating Experience

This episode marks not just a milestone for Sailing Yabá but also a testament to the crew’s resilience and adaptability in the face of boating challenges. Stay tuned as they embark on their journey, transforming dreams into reality one sail at a time.

💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.
