Restoring our sailboat's RIGGING: Backstay fix & Mast varnish with FPV Footage — Sailing Yabá 214
July 07, 2024 by Sailing Yabá | Language: EN Play Time: 00:28:46 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

Welcome aboard Sailing Yabá as we embark on another exciting episode focused on improving our beloved sailboat’s RIGGING system! This time, we tackle the crucial task of fixing the backstay issue, a critical component for ensuring proper stability and sail efficiency. We also take the opportunity to freshen up the mast with a new coat of varnish.
Backstay Fix: Strengthening Our Sailboat
As keen-eyed viewers will have noticed, our sailboat’s rigging setup hasn’t been perfect. Specifically, the backstay – a vital component for controlling mast tension and stability – has been problematic. But worry not, because we’re determined to rectify this issue once and for all!
Our plan was to temporarily secure the backstay until we could fully address and fix the issue at its root cause. After assessing the current setup, it became clear that the mast cap – where the backstay is attached – needed some adjustments for optimal functionality.
Reviving the Mast: A Coat of Varnish
In parallel, we seized the opportunity to breathe new life into our mast by giving it a fresh coat of varnish. This task involved carefully sanding down both masts before applying the varnish evenly, ensuring an enhanced and long-lasting finish.
Overcoming Challenges with Teamwork
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Sanding the masts was no easy feat, requiring climbing skills and physical endurance. Additionally, identifying the most suitable material for reinforcing our mast cap proved to be a task that demanded both time and patience.
Sea Creature Encounters
In a delightful turn of events, our quest for rigging improvement was accompanied by exciting wildlife encounters. During various stages of the project, we managed to spot sea lions and penguins near our boat! These chance sightings made the work even more memorable.
Lessons Learned & What’s Next
This episode not only showcases the importance of staying focused on our boat-improvement goals but also highlights the significance of team effort and problem-solving skills in tackling such projects. As we progress, our next steps include finalizing the backstay fix, refinishing other mast components, and preparing for sail hoisting.
As we venture further into the exciting world of sailboat maintenance and upgrades, we can’t help but express our gratitude to all our patrons and supporters. Your contributions have been invaluable in pushing us forward, both literally and figuratively. We’re excited for what’s next – so stay tuned!

💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.
