Transforming Plastic Waste Into Petrol – An Inspiring Initiative in Bali

Sailing around the world is an ambitious endeavor, and for [Thomas] of the ‘Sailing with Thomas’ YouTube channel, it represents a strong commitment to fulfill his dream while emphasizing the importance of ocean conservation. In this particular episode, Thomas takes viewers on an informative and eye-opening journey as he visits a groundbreaking initiative that aims to tackle the devastating issue of plastic pollution. The numbers are staggering – 19 tons of plastic waste enter our oceans every minute. This equates to 1,140 tons per hour and a whopping 27,360 tons each day. It’s no wonder that the global plastic pollution crisis has reached alarming proportions. To put it into perspective, the human race is annually polluting our oceans with an astounding 9,849 billion tons of plastic.A Positive Surprise in Indonesia Thomas expected to find a depressing view on the plastic pollution front during his visit to Indonesia. However, he was pleasantly surprised by the progress made and the evident motivation of local authorities. Though Indonesia still has a long way to go in addressing this global issue, initiatives such as Plastic Odyssey offer hope and the potential for change. The Vision Behind Plastic Odyssey Plastic Odyssey is on a mission to educate, inspire, and teach entrepreneurs how to recycle plastic waste into new products using low-tech machines. The core focus of the project lies in targeting the source of the problem rather than merely treating the symptoms that have already emerged. The Recycling Process During their visit aboard Plastic Odyssey’s ship, Thomas and his team received an insightful explanation of the process that turns plastic waste into a new resource. This includes sorting and cleaning the plastic before converting it into pellets for various purposes, such as making plastic planks, tubes, paste, or even transforming non-recyclable plastic into petrol. The ‘Petrol from Plastic’ Machine The team was fascinated by the potential of turning plastic waste into fuel. The machine that accomplishes this feat, with an output capacity of 30 liters of fuel per hour, can be incredibly valuable for remote locations where resources may be limited. The Last Resort – PES Process Out of the plastic that’s not suitable for recycling due to contamination, being mixed, or having reached its limit for recycling cycles, a significant percentage (70-80%) can be transformed into oil during the PES process. The remaining material forms solid residues at the bottom of the reactor or becomes gas used to heat up the reactor. The Importance of Spreading Knowledge and Expertise After visiting Plastic Odyssey, Thomas recognizes how essential it is for this project to continue sharing its knowledge and expertise with startups and organizations around the world. The ship will continue on a circumnavigation journey to new destinations where more people can benefit from learning about this innovative approach to recycling plastic waste. Conclusion The episode ends with a powerful reminder that there is still much work to be done in combating plastic pollution, but initiatives like Plastic Odyssey provide hope for a brighter future. Thomas and his viewers leave inspired to do their part, whether through supporting such projects or by actively participating in local conservation efforts. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can help tackle plastic pollution, be sure to check out the Plastic Odyssey website and stay informed on their mission to create a cleaner ocean for generations to come.

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I'm a sailor with a YouTube channel and not a YouTuber. Sailing around the world in a Bavaria 55 Cruiser mostly solo, making videos whenever we have time for it.
Comfortable at sea with 4 decades of sailing experience and hundreds of thousands of miles behind me.

Even though this is season 6 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning, and obviously not from my entire sailing life. Before full-time sailing 6 years ago, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing and racing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
