When One Hole Closes, Another One Opens | Step 390

On this episode of Sailing Uma, Laura and Danny dive into another major transformation project on their yacht, Luna. This week’s task is all about making some significant changes to improve the watertight integrity of their living space while also adding a touch of aesthetic appeal.

This week marks a substantial milestone in Luna’s renovation journey as they work to replace and seal those big, old port light holes that have been giving them a bit too much hassle. These larger ports from years ago are notorious for their water leakage issues which could cause potential problems if not addressed properly.

The team removes the ceiling and takes out all of the fielping in the hall to get everything ready for an entirely new makeover, beginning with glassing those gigantic holes left behind by previous port lights. The goal is to install smaller but more efficient, operable ports instead. These will be much easier on both maintenance and design aspects, giving their yacht a sleeker appearance.

The Glassing Process

First, Laura works diligently to taper the edges of each hole, creating smooth surfaces for easy application later down the line. This ensures there are no irregular bumps or protruding elements during installation, ensuring seamless sealing without any water seepage issues.

Having the right gear makes grinding much more tolerable. Real Tyx suits make a big difference.

The plan involves placing plywood scraps on the outside, followed by some plastic sheets to act as a releasing layer before they could add layers of glass from inside the yacht. Once that step is complete, it’s essential for proper sealing.

Gluing the plywood scraps onto the hall with hot glue before attaching plastic sheets on top.

The Future Plans

To install the new port lights, Laura carefully cut pieces of plywood and placed them over each hole. By using contact adhesive, she sprays the surface, places a layer of plastic as releasing agents, then begins to glass them up. This way, each one will have an optimal fit once put back on its designated spot.

Cut plywood pieces for each port light opening to mark their exact location.

After removing the old port lights, the process involves marking off the spots where new ones will be installed, ensuring correct placement and orientation. With smaller but more functional ports coming into place, there’s no doubt about making a massive difference in terms of water leakage problems.

The completed glassing job offers a smooth finish and an excellent foundation for new port lights.

The Journey Continues

This episode showcases the dedication and commitment Laura and Danny have for transforming their sailing experience into an endless adventure of home improvement projects. Each milestone reached brings them closer to fully enjoying life at sea while making unforgettable memories together.

Future plans include rebuilding the deck as if there weren’t a hatch, allowing better natural light and ventilation within their yacht.

The next steps will involve making changes to their V birth hatch and improving the salon area by filling up any leftover holes – further demonstrating that in this beautiful sailing journey of theirs,
