Visiting Tipplers Anchorage on South Strandbroke Island as We Cruise The ICW in Queensland

Hello friends, my name is James, and this is my 1965 Alberg 30 sloop SV Triteia. I have been slowly sailing solo around the world since leaving Los Angeles in 2021. This is Ronda, a Kiwi sailor who moved aboard full-time once I reached Sydney. Join us as we explore the East Coast of Australia and see as many wild places and wild animals as possible just down here, oh wow, as we make our way up to Southeast Asia.

Good morning from the Gold Coast! We moved over to this spot yesterday. It’s a much better spot than the other one, which was good for an Anchorage but there is more access to stuff here and there’s a little dinghy dock right there at the jetty. And there’s a big shopping center with all kinds of stuff, so we’re going to kind of get our ducks in a row, get what we need while we’re here and then start heading up North to another spot I can’t recall the name of the Anchorage we’re planning on going to tonight but as high tide approaches, we have to move with the tides inside this waterway because there’s a lot of shallow depths so that’s kind of determining when we can and can’t move. So, that’s what we’re up to this morning. It is beautiful and sunny; the rains have passed. We’ve had like 3 days of rain, and we’re happy to have sunshine.

So what are we doing? We are heading ashore to grab a coffee, and then provisioning before we head um out of South Stradbroke Island up towards Moreton Bay. What is this called? Broadwater, I think B Water, yeah. This is B Gold Coast is the city, right. Yeah, we’re on the Gold Coast currently, then make our way up into the Intracoastal Waterway – what is that area called?

t t

Is that Broadwater all the way through or does it go to Moreton Bay? It gets to Moreton Bay. Kind of, we’ll get into Moreton Bay today but that’s called the Intracoastal Waterway, ah the Inner Coastal Waterway okay, right. We don’t know how much is up there in terms of provisioning and stuff so yeah might as well grab it here while we can. Got my list – nice, nice, nice and yeah let’s get it done, let’s go.

t

Show to the jitty! Oh such a nice day today right, beautiful beautiful [Music]. Look at that bird on the swing, he looks confused. It’s like it’s real but [Music] trying to catch up [Music]. I was sitting on the lower seat first and it’s much [Laughter] harder you so fun what are you going to make with those? What am I going to do with these mushroom pieces – like stuffed mushroom shells that’s yesss. You got to find the perfect ones.

Traits! How did we do?

Uh, we did okay. I think we got most things on your list – yes apart from corn flour – corn flour? No, no corn flour yeah that’s it. Other than that, we’re good to go I think so I think we’re ready all right time to haul up and head out the tide is increasing we have it with us and we’re going to drive 11 miles from here at Broadwater to up to Moreton Bay uh to Tippler’s I think is the name of the Anchorage. It’s an 11-mile passage so it should just take us a couple hours we’re only going to be moving about 10 to 11 miles a day with the tides through this whole run up to Brisbane um, so yeah let’s go ahead and knock out today’s leg.

t t

Holy wow! We are approaching Tippler’s Anchorage. Pretty mellow day dodging massive power boats and Jet Skis and you name it um but pretty chill, two I don’t even know how many hours like 3 to 4-hour passage and uh yeah we’re going to come in here and find a good spot to drop the hook and see what there is to see. Ronda found a a track or a walk rather that can take us over to the Oceanside so we might check that out. Yeah, that’s be cool I’d like to do that – yeah! Walk over seems pretty doable – see if we can see some monotones or something?

t

Yeah maybe kangaroo, that be nice probably whab so stoked to have like a little bitty short passage knocked out in the protection of the island even with all the chaos of the power boats uh but yeah let’s get in and get set up.

Welcome to rers we anchored in like 8 feet of water so like less than 3 meters um, we’re just going to be here a night and happy to be here easy passage today there’s a lot of eagles flying around which is really cool. Like I don’t I’m not sure which kind but they’re like golden and they have a white head very beautiful. They’re all over the place super cool! There a little public jetty here, and uh after anchor watch we’re going to head ashore and have a peekaboo are we just going to tie up to the do?

Oh, just got off the boat and already saw kangaroo hopping through the park yeah then oh yeah little bitty kangaroo was that a wh- no that’s a kangaroo! Kangaroo! That’s a kangaroo. He’s right here right here this our first wild kangaroo so cute I guess it’s this thing like a camping ground and stuff hi [Applause] baby 38 pretty warm out walking on the road cuz we couldn’t find the trail there’s these really cool birds we’ve never seen before we can’t haven’t got a good look at them yet oh there they are oh you see they look like honeyeaters, oh!

The winds like EP they’re like orange and green yeah they’re like fluorescent green backs almost with like these brown wings and they their beaks look like honey eaters. They’re really neat! We got to look up what they are when we get out when out they’re Orange right, orange pretty right super cool yeah looks like a honeyeater like a miniature kingfisher almost I’ll put a proper photo on the screen right now for you guys cuz there’s no way we’re going to get a good shot there so quick.

I feel like I need to start bringing the binoculars on yeah so we can see them better oh they’re talking now they’re talking [Music]. Yeah you get a good look at those ones up there on it what’d you find? How glossy this is oh yeah very shiny it’s like a lacquer very shiny. We’ve already spotted a few cudgies on the beach too. I would love to see a cuttlefish underwater in the wild I’ve seen them in a jar but never in the ocean so funny I grew up like us buying those for our birds yeah it’s crazy almost look like a feather right oh yeah it does, it’s really neat! Crazy there’s a kangaroo up on the hill watching us right by where we think the trailhead is.

We’ve been wanting to see kangaroos on the beach so this is the closest we’ve gotten so far track marker that might be a w-be huh oh there’s a bunch wow yeah like three just ran across the path yeah [Music]. C for after our mission hiking across Stradbroke Island to the Oceanside and seeing many golden Wallabees regular Wallabees and kangaroos on our way back to the boat we finally got our wish and saw kangaroo hopping down the beach if you enjoy the content on this channel and would like to contribute you can consider joining the Patreon crew thanks for watching Fair Winds until next time!

Episode 376 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we provision in Broadwater Bay near Gold Coast and start making our way up inside the Intracoastal Waterway. We had to move the with tides inside the ICW so we only traveled about 10 miles each day. For the first night we anchored at Tipplers Anchorage on South Stradbroke Island and had a wonderful hike across the island seeing kangaroos, wallabies and golden wallabies! We also saw a number of beautiful birds we had never seen before!
