Liveaboard Life; Getting Water, Food and Boat Parts Up the Brisbane River in Australia

Liveaboard Life: Navigating Australia’s Brisbane River for Water, Food, and Boat Parts

Sailing around the world is an extraordinary experience, filled with new discoveries at every turn. For James and Ronda, their journey has taken them to the stunning East Coast of Australia, where they’ve been making their way up the Brisbane River in search of essential supplies for their liveaboard lifestyle.

With a 1965 Alberg 30 Sloop SV Triteia as their home on the water, James and Ronda have been sailing solo and together since leaving Los Angeles. The East Coast has provided them with numerous challenges and adventures, from navigating wild places to spotting unique wildlife.

Securing Water and Provisions

To ensure their journey continues smoothly, James and Ronda are always on the lookout for essential supplies like water. Although they don’t rely on watermakers, they’ve discovered that finding potable water in Australia is surprisingly easy, thanks to well-maintained public docks along the river.

In addition to securing water, James and Ronda also prioritize stocking up on provisions. Their search for food has led them to explore local parks and cafés, enjoying a taste of civilization while remaining anchored near the bustling city center.

Boat Maintenance in Australia

To ensure their vessel remains in top shape during this leg of their voyage, James and Ronda made a stop at Whitworth’s Marine store. Here they found much-needed sound dampening for their engine bay, as well as Radiant Barrier – a solution they’d been searching for across several cities.

Boat maintenance is a crucial aspect of liveaboard life, and James and Ronda’s dedication to keeping their Sloop SV Triteia in top condition ensures their journey will continue safely.

Exploring City Life

In between sourcing supplies, the duo has had a chance to explore the vibrant city life in Brisbane. Their time ashore includes visits to well-equipped laundromats – although they acknowledge that laundry services in Australia can be on the pricey side.

Australian Wildlife Encounters

The natural beauty of Australia is matched by its unique wildlife, which has provided James and Ronda with unforgettable moments along their journey. During their time anchored near Brisbane’s city center, they encountered an interesting bird species known as the “bin chicken” – a slang term for Ibis, sporting beautiful iridescent feathers.

Next Leg of Their Journey

Ahead lies more adventure as James and Ronda continue their journey up the Brisbane River before heading out towards Southeast Asia. With essential supplies on board and a better understanding of boating life in Australia, they’re prepared for whatever comes next.

Join this dynamic couple on their remarkable sailing adventure as they traverse new territories, find solace in city amenities, and encounter fascinating wildlife along the way. It’s all part of embracing liveaboard life on the beautiful East Coast of Australia.

Episode 378 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we show you what it's like to be a live aboard and a little of what goes into getting water, food, boat parts and finding a place to do laundry. These are simple chores for those who live on land but for cruising sailors who are always finding themselves in new places, it is not quite so simple. Australia has some amazing public docks with free water which makes that chore much easier than it is in some places I have sailed to around the world. This will get even more tricky as we move into wild and remote places!

We also took full advantage of the well stocked chandleries in Australia while we had access to them and were happy to find sound damping for the engine bay!
