Exploring Cowan Creek in New South Wales on a 30ft Sailboat

James and Rhonda, sailing enthusiasts aboard their 1965 Alberg 30 Sloop SV Triteia, have embarked on a captivating journey around the world. Departing from Los Angeles in 2021, they have since explored the East Coast of Australia while seeking out remote locations and encountering unique wildlife along the way.

A Search for Seclusion: Leaving Castle Lagoon

Having thoroughly enjoyed their time at Castle Lagoon and taking advantage of its waterfall, James and Rhonda decide it’s time to move on in search of new scenery. They briefly discuss plans for the day’s voyage and set off towards Cowan Creek, a large and deep inlet along the East Coast.

Cowan Creek: Initial Exploration

As they make their way up Cowan Creek, James remarks that it is considered the largest and deepest inlet within the region. They decide to explore Smith’s Creek instead and come across several secluded coves which are home to mooring balls and a larger marina.

Anchor in Spirits Cove

Spirits Cove appears to be an ideal location for anchorage, though the water is shallow. James notes that as it is high tide, any shallow areas will become more pronounced when the tide drops. Despite some nearby boats and people on shore, they choose to anchor in Spirits Cove, securing their vessel with only a few scoops of chain due to poor holding conditions.

New Anchorage at Looking Glass Cove

Searching for a better anchorage, James and Rhonda find themselves drawn to Looking Glass Cove. Here they encounter several mooring balls with boats already attached, deciding instead to anchor further up the cove where depths reach 48 feet. As the tide ebbs, they ensure careful positioning of their vessel to avoid shallower areas.

Experiencing Local Wildlife

In an unexpected twist of adventure, the pair discovers a massive lizard resting on a log within their anchorage. Upon closer inspection, James speculates it might be a monitor lizard and recognizes this sighting as just one among many fascinating creatures they’ve encountered in Australia’s coastal regions.

A Perfect Day Exploring Cowan Creek

The day concludes on a high note, with James and Rhonda enjoying the warm waters, clear views, and diverse local fauna at Looking Glass Cove. With such experiences and more to come along their sailing journey through Australia’s East Coast, they reflect on the beauty of each new location discovered.

Episode 368 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we slip the line at Castle Lagoon and make our way deeper into Cowan Creek. It echos our time in the Marlborough Sounds of New Zealand with its deep coves and inlets and general lack of manmade structures. After not finding good holding to anchor, we continue on to Twilight Inlet and pick up a mooring ball for the night.
