Cruising inside the Intracoastal waterway to the Brisbane River & Snorkeling a Shipwreck!

Episode 377 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we continue to make our way up inside the ICW, From tipplers to Browns Bay and on to Peel Island. Dodging shoals and regularly seeing less than 2ft under our keel in places even at high tide, we finally made it out into the deeper water of Moreton Bay and were not longer controlled by the tides.

I have also included a little clip of a snorkel adventure where we explored a shipwreck at Peel Island.

Moving onwards towards Browns Bay on Peele Island, a sense of isolation pervades the area as they enter remote mangrove terrains. An attempt at a ‘Mangrove Adventure’ brings about an encounter with unforeseen challenges, yet this fuels their determination to explore even further.

The following morning offers them minimal wind conditions; therefore, anchoring in what appears like a desolate stretch of the bay surrounded by shallow waters affords protection from rougher elements. Their curiosity is peaked upon learning about an interesting wreck off Horseshoe Bay – perfect for snorkeling – however, they are unable to anchor due to strong winds during that period.

A mini adventure ensues in showcasing the underwater beauty of a shipwreck located in Horseshoe Bay. This sunken dredging vessel named ‘The Platypus,’ dating back to 1884, was once heavily involved in creating numerous ports throughout Queensland’s coastline. It’s now transformed into an exquisite coral sanctuary teeming with marine life, offering James and Ronda a unique snorkeling experience.

A thrilling prospect lies ahead – maneuvering a challenging passage of thirteen miles up to the mouth of Brisbane River. Their flexible plan also includes navigating 27-mile distance from there until reaching their anchor destination by Brisbane. The Intra-Coastal Waterway has served its purpose in shielding them after overcoming difficulties in New South Wales.

The Future Holds More Adventures

As they conclude this episode, James and Ronda invite their supporters to become a part of the ongoing journey. They thank everyone for joining them thus far on their remarkable sailing expedition around the world, promising more enchanting encounters in forthcoming episodes.

As they conclude this episode, James and Ronda invite their supporters to become a part of the ongoing journey. They thank everyone for joining them thus far on their remarkable sailing expedition around the world, promising more enchanting encounters in forthcoming episodes.
