Crossing Wide Bay Bar at Fraser Island & Catching Fish for Dinner Along The Queensland Coast

Crossing Wide Bay Bar at Fraser Island

On their journey along the East Coast of Australia, sailors James and Rhonda from Sailing Triteia face a challenging but doable passage: crossing Wide Bay Bar at Fraser Island. As professional marine documentalists, they share insights into their navigation techniques and preparations for making this adventurous voyage.

The Journey to Wide Bay Bar

After leaving Moreton Bay behind, they make an overnight stop at Mula before pushing on for Double Island Point. The lack of wind doesn’t deter them; instead, they use their knowledge and the boat’s clean bottom to efficiently cover the 48 nautical miles in about 11 hours.

Catching Fresh Fish for Dinner

Before crossing the bar, James and Rhonda have a taste of local cuisine by catching fresh fish. With just four fish filleted before this adventure, they rely on YouTube to improve their skills. The tuna turned out perfectly for a delicious meal.

Navigating Through Wide Bay Bar

Before attempting the passage, they reach out to the Tin Can Bay Coast Guard for updated coordinates and advice. Although puzzled by having to call rather than consult a website, they follow the instructions and plot the new data into their Navionics.

A Perfect Day

With no wind to contend with and shifting sands behaving as predicted, James and Rhonda navigate through the bar safely. Although the currents in ‘The Mad Mile’ challenge their skills, they make it across without incident, marveling at how treacherous this passage can be under different conditions.

Anchorage on Fraser Island

Following the successful crossing, they anchor near Fraser Island in 15 ft of water. Surrounded by other yachts and enjoying a peaceful evening, they reflect on their adventurous day, which concludes with gratitude for fair winds and smooth waters until next time.

Conclusion

Crossing Wide Bay Bar at Fraser Island may be a challenge, but with careful planning and respect for the local conditions, it can be done safely. James and Rhonda’s journey demonstrates that even in challenging passages, there’s always an exciting story waiting to be shared.

Episode 380 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia

Hello Friends,
On this episode we make way from Moreton Bay and head North up to Double Island Point, catching a Jack Mackerel Tuna along the way. Once we are anchored @LoveGrubGalley cooks some of it up for dinner. (Make sure you check out Rhonda’s cooking channel)

The next day we prepared to Cross the Wide Bay Bar and make our way across in perfect conditions. We had heard many warnings about this bar but it is only dangerous if you try and cross it at a time when you shouldn't be crossing it. I would image this place gets super crazy during storms are large swells.

I found the following two YouTube channels to be very helpful when planning my trip up the East Coast of Australia : @MotorSailingforOldDudes and @CruisingEastCoastAus
