Episode #189 – Remembering The Importance of Scope and Learning the Systems
Hello Friends,
On this episode we start our day by being blown offshore from the anchorage and have to haul in all the gear and haul up and beat back into the wind to re-anchor.
With the new ground tackle I changed / simplified our marking system but was not use to the new system yet and mistakingly had only put out 3 scope instead of 5 scope (I never anchor with less than 5 scope out). We were anchored in 50 feet of water and as the winds increased and we were blown towards deep water our ground tackle quickly found itself with nothing to reset on.
When we re-anchored We dropped our 45lb mantus and 250 of 5/16 chain on the sea floor and stayed put in high winds all day and into the night.
I actually valued us dragging as much as I valued the knowledge of how well the new ground tackle held. It was a good reminder that if you dont have enough scope out it doesn’t matter how robust your ground tackle is you can still end up dragging in the right conditions.
