This week on Sailing Sweet Ruka, we finally leave the dock and set sail across the vast expanse of the South Pacific Ocean. Our destination is the tropical paradise of French Polynesia. Before leaving, however, we must navigate one final obstacle – the treacherously fast currents of Canal Chao in southern Chile.
The Challenge of Canal Chao
It's time to launch into the Pacific Ocean! We battle strong currents and choppy waves as we leave the coast of Chile behind us, sailing towards French Polynesia and around the world.

Contents:
00:39 - Leaving the dock... finally! There's nothing like that feeling of tossing off the docklines and setting your sights on the next goal!
2:07 - A recap of how far we've come to get here. Our bottom paints from International and Akzonobel have carried us a long way and we can't wait to sail into warmer waters! #thatfeeling
4:24 - Anchoring for the night to plan the 20 mile passage down Canal Chacao, famous for strong currents and standing waves in the worst conditions!
5:04 - With the sunrise behind us, it's time to make our way down the channel, keeping an eye on the current speed, which can reach past 9 knots!
5:53 - We are sailing doublehanded, but it takes a village to make this journey possible! Curtis mentions a few people we need to thank to get Sweet Ruca out into open water once again!
8:01 - A flashback from a tour inside the ferry boat that carries double decker busses and cars from the mainland of Chile to Chiloe and how they traverse the currents of Canal Chacao.
9:19 - This is it! The sails are hoisted with the last bit of land behind us! The flat channel has now turned into a washing machine of lumpy seas. What a difference!
10:38 - The closest we have ever come to a whale! (except for that one time...) What kind of whales do you think they are?
11:02 - Grey skies and steel grey water as Curtis give our first ocean update.
14:14 - The start of day two and Sweet Ruca is flying along on passage!
