As we are exploring the island, we meet the Azores first singlehanded circumnavigator, and two time solo round the world sailor – Genuíno Madruga. We are sailing the same path, West about via the Capes, and also sailing a fiberglass boat, so he opened up his log books for us and shared his knowledge and experience.
Full 2 hour interview and Cape Horn sailing knowledge drop coming soon on Patreon. Find out more about Genuino and his boat “Hemingway” at his website http://www.genuinomadruga.com/ or if you are ever in Horta, make sure to eat the seafood restaurant owned by this amazing solo sailor and fisherman https://www.genuino.pt/.

This is a can’t miss chance to learn in person details about sailing in this area shorthanded. We also tour the rest of the beautiful island if Faial via rental car. We do a little rental car off-roading, driving some challenging dirt roads to get to the top of the Volcano’s Caldera.
We also get the drone out to show the islands volcanic topography as well as visit a volcano museum and climb to the top of a huge lighthouse for an amazing sea view.
John from SV Slug Hunter that crossed the Atlantic with us west to east also finally arrives and we share a celebrational drink and cigar. https://www.youtube.com/sealifestation
Roxy goes for a paddleboard ride and tours the harbor.
Kate paints our boat logo on the wall in Horta Harbor, cementing our place in this this magical spot.

Who is this crazy couple?
We are Kate and Curtis aboard our boat Sweet Ruca. We are kind of like Sailing la Vagabonde, except we have a sailing dog named Roxy instead of a kid, and a monohull instead of a catamaran.
Two and a half years ago we ditched the city life, sold our house and everything else, and went to sea aboard our tiny home. Before we went sailing, we loved adventure travel. Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, boating, and mountain biking were a few of our passions. We narrowed our options down to buying a boat to sail around the world or buying a van to build out for van life and mountain biking. We think we made the right choice.
Come sailing around the world with us and learn how to sail as you go! Other sailing channels we like are Uma, Soulianis, Zatara, Nahoa, Project Atticus, Delos, and Doodles (without the sexy Instagram models).
For more satisfying video subscribe to our channel. We think we have some relaxing and fun and sometimes asmr videos of our sailing and travel that we want to share with you.
