A 280 Mile Sailing Passage More Dangerous Than Cape Horn? [Ep. 137]

We sail across a stretch of water which may be more feared than Cape Horn! Even huge ships don’t venture here in bad weather. We find out why as we deal with huge waves and broken gear!

Gulfo de Penas translates in English to the Gulf of Sorrows, known as such because of the number of widows it creates. This challenging stretch of water forces our small sailboat to go between huge southern ocean waves, strong currents, and towering rocks on the lee shore.

Many ships have been wrecked here, including the famous shipwreck and mutiny of the HMS Wager. We sailed by Wager Island and the locaition of this amazing story as we enter the treacherous waters of the gulf in the middle of the night.

We battle huge waves left over from a southern ocean storm which cause our mainsail preventer to break and gives Kate a bad case of seasickness. This is truly the most difficult part of sailing the fjords of Chilean Patagonia.
