It’s Ena’s birthday today, and I wanted to surprise her with something special. So, we’ve anchored in this spot because it’s close to a small island and just 100 meters from where we dropped our hook lies a unique attraction – a plane that once belonged to Pablo Escobar.
We picked this spot because Ena mentioned that she loves being in the water, and what better way to celebrate her birthday than by exploring some unique locations in The Exumas? We headed out on our dinghy with a sense of excitement. Little did Ana know, but she wouldn’t be able to keep secrets from him because he would always figure things out, ask questions, and do his research.
The area where we anchored is just outside of the channel, so there are many ships that have wrecked nearby. Upon arrival at our location, it was amazing to see such an incredible sight as the remains of Pablo’s plane on the shallow sandbank. With its history and allure, it surely made for a memorable birthday surprise.
The day went quickly as we continued sailing towards Georgetown – our ultimate destination. Along the way, however, we encountered several anchorages that just weren’t suitable. We ultimately decided to head through the Alice Town Cut because it seemed the best option for navigating with our current fair weather conditions.
We successfully made it through the cut without any issues, thanks to a little planning and knowledge of the tides. On the other side of the channel, we found ourselves in an incredibly calm body of water – like a flat lake.
Despite not always sailing efficiently or having perfect conditions all the time, we learn from each experience and cherish the moments when everything falls into place. And that’s what makes sailing so special – you never quite know where the journey will take you, but it sure is beautiful along the way.
