Sailing SV CUBA, the popular YouTube channel that follows two sailors as they navigate their way through beautiful waters and thrilling adventures, faced an unexpected challenge recently. In their recent video titled “[BOAT LIFE Upwind đ Something is WRONG! E110]”, Marjolein and Sven explain how they discovered a major issue with their boat’s main sail.
The duo was sailing when they realized that the main sail was jamming. At first, they didn’t realize what was wrong as Marjolein was on the helm while Sven took out the sail. However, after taking a closer look, they noticed that the roller had broken and this was essential for keeping the foot of the main sail leveled with the boom.
The couple managed to get the sail back into place, hoping that it wouldn’t jam more. With no other choice, they started thinking of possible ways to fix this issue, as they couldn’t continue their journey without a functional main sail. Their roller was nowhere to be found on deck.
Thankfully, Sven noticed that they had two rollers for their preventor. The couple decided to use one of these rollers in its place. With this fix, they hoped the main sail would no longer jam and could carry them through the remainder of their journey.
Despite this repair, the Sailing SV CUBA crew was far from out of danger. They were in a part of the ocean that was known for having unpredictable weather and storms. Their boat was facing a beating, which would make their journey tough to navigate.
The crew planned on traveling down the coast of Dominican Republic towards the British Virgin Islands. Their sail had barely held up until this point and they knew it couldn’t withstand any more challenges. They were aware that there was a chance their main sail could tear completely, leaving them with no means to propel themselves forward.
This ordeal is not only a testament to the courage and determination of Sailing SV CUBA’s crew, but also a lesson in problem-solving and adaptability. Even experienced sailors face unexpected obstacles and they must use their skills and creativity to find solutions when faced with challenges.
Despite the struggles, the couple manages to keep a positive outlook on their journey. While they navigate through tough sailing conditions, Marjolein starts cooking a tasty meal. The duo finds solace in the small comforts life at sea provides, such as watching the stars, spending time with their cat, and appreciating the stunning natural surroundings.
The worst kind of sailing? Upwind Sailing for sure! Beating for days against wind and current and we are hardly making way.
But once we reach the beautiful beaches of the windward islands, we will probably forget all about it. Until we have to do it all over again đ
We're sailing around the world, and with your support, we will fund better cameras, the internet to upload videos, and of course, the occasional sailorâs happy medicine. đșđ
