In this sailing episode our boat life takes us to Africa! What did we expect? We are on our last stretch and sail from the Egadi Islands to Monastir, Tunisia. It has been one heck of a trip, sailing non-stop for 11 days in the winter.
After a bumpy mooring at the marina, we get to do the check-in and do the clearance process (formalities) with the authorities, bring our papers to customs and inform the port police. Fortunately, all this can be done right within the marina and the process as a sailor and cruiser could not be easier. Even though we did not speak the language it all went smoothly.
While you may not consider Tunisia as a sailing destination when you charter a boat, it can be a great stop-over for a full time cruiser to reset their cruising status within the EU.
After some brushing up for us and SV CUBA, we headed out to explore the town.
Only a few hundred meters behind the marina the old town of Monastir opens up and we manage to find a small restaurant with authentic Tunisian cuisine. But since we had completely run out of fresh fruit on the sailboat, we still had to provision. So, we headed to the market which is right next to the town centre. We were surprised how much fresh fruit and veggies we could buy for only a few Euros. Visiting the old market was an amazing experience for us. After we had spent almost 2 weeks alone on our sailboat, we were now surrounded by so many people. Especially the fish market of Monastir is absolutely buzzing, and everyone was in a great mood.
Just outside the market hall, we even found the freshest honey, we could have imagined.
What a great welcome that was for some salty sailors to North Africa!
We are Enrique (Kiki) from Cuba and Sarah (Salsa) from Germany, a sailing couple. We are living on a boat, our tiny house, creating a travel vlog as we sail around the world. We have almost zero sailing experience, but are determined to circumnavigate & share our adventures with you.
We are by no means film makers or video editors so please let us know what you think about our videos, what you like to see more of – or less 😉
Sailing life can be a real challenge and a bit scary at times (especially when your home dangles from an iron thread just 10 mm thick). What is to come? We don’t know but day by day we are learning how to live more sustainable, living off grid, more connected to nature, so we can share our adventures with you. Come storm or good weather.
