We almost sailed into a TORNADO [Ep. 47]

Sailing Supernova, a YouTube channel following two friends as they embark on an adventure sailing around the world aboard an old catamaran, recently had an unexpected encounter near the Panama Canal. While anchored at Colon, Panama, just before setting off to explore San Blas Islands with their newly adopted crew member, Coconut, they stumbled upon abandoned ships sunken in the water, a few miles away from the entrance of the canal.

Curious Discovery

Intrigued by these discoveries, Sailing Supernova set out to investigate further. Upon arrival at the scene, they were astonished to find several half-submerged ships of varying sizes – a small container ship among them.

Navigating The Wrecks

With no prior knowledge about the location or reason behind these sunken ships, the adventurous duo embarked on an exploratory journey. One of the larger ships appeared stable enough to enter, offering them a once-in-a-lifetime experience they could not resist.

Unprepared For A Storm

However, just as they were about to set sail from their anchorage near the beginning of the Panama Canal, an ominous weather pattern developed. Unaware of a tornado brewing close by, Sailing Supernova almost sailed straight into it. The whirlwind began at the water’s surface and extended upwards, creating an unusual and alarming sight for our friends.

A Daring Decision

Determined to continue their voyage, despite the danger, they chose to wait out the storm rather than cancel or alter their plans. After the tornado passed, they set off for San Blas Islands with renewed vigor and excitement.

Unraveling Mysteries

The team had discovered more than just sunken ships; there were additional shipwrecks scattered along the shoreline, raising questions about possible storms or intentional grounding by the owners. This fascinating discovery prompted further investigation and exploration, even while nearby locals seemed to take it all in stride.

Continuing The Journey

With these exciting encounters behind them, Sailing Supernova moves forward, exploring the San Blas Islands and surrounding areas with renewed curiosity. Despite facing potential surgery for Coconut and managing challenging weather conditions like tornadoes, they remain determined to make the most of their once-in-a-lifetime adventure sailing around the world.

The Journey Ahead

Ahead lies the Eastern Caribbean and beyond, with hurricanes a concern but no deterring them from continuing their voyage. Their resilience, determination, and adventurous spirit exemplify what it means to follow your dreams, even when faced with unexpected challenges or obstacles.

We almost sailed directly into a tornado!!!

We truly couldn't believe our eyes as a tornado appeared at the entrance to the Panama Canal, right where we were anchored and directly in the path we were just about to sail into. We have already been contending with endless lightning here in Panama but this was a real shock!
